Astronomy Fun Fact #47

Earth loses about 90 MILLION kg every year because molecules in the upper atmosphere escape Earth's gravitational pull and fly off into space. Most of those molecules are hydrogen.

When you combine this with yesterday's fun fact, you learn that the Earth has a net loss of 50 million kg every year!

But don't worry! That's still only 0.000000000000001% of the Earth's mass, so it would take trillions of years for us to lose our entire atmosphere this way. And the Sun will destroy us long before then.
