Astronomy Fun Fact #43

According to the Lunar Reconnaissance Orbiter, the south pole of the Moon has a temperature of -397 degrees Fahrenheit. That's about 1 degree warmer than Pluto, even though Pluto is about 40 times farther from the Sun!


The Moon's south pole is so cold because it never gets any sunlight, and the Moon has no internal source of heat like the Earth does.
