Astronomy Fun Fact #11

Many people assume that you would die instantly and dramatically if you were shot out into space without protective gear. In reality, it's much slower and much less extreme than you might think. You won't explode right away because your skin does a good job of keeping all of your innards inside, and you won't instantly freeze because the empty vacuum of space actually isn't that great at conducting heat away from your body.


Instead, you'll likely puff up as the fluids in your body expand from the low pressure and then you'll die after a couple of minutes from a lack of oxygen.
